The Biodiesel Production Process

Turning Waste into Fuel

Used oil from your favourite restaurant’s deep fryer can be transformed into more than just fries. Businesses that recycle their used oil contribute to the production of clean, sustainable, and efficient biodiesel. Made from recycled cooking oil, soybean oil, and animal fats, biodiesel is a renewable and clean-burning fuel.

It All Begins with Used Cooking Oil

The first step in our biodiesel process is collecting used cooking oil from commercial fryers in restaurants, food processors, and home kitchens. Various oils, including soy, vegetable, canola, and animal fats, are suitable. Home users can store oil in its original container and drop it off at convenient locations, while businesses can enroll in our free service for regular, no-cost collections with durable storage containers provided by consecutive.

Refinement and Purification

After collecting used cooking oil, the next step is refining. This process filters out impurities like meat scraps, water, and bread crumbs that could obstruct the conversion process. Used oil contains high concentrations of free fatty acids (FFAs) due to repeated heating. These FFAs are pre-treated after filtering to make them usable for biodiesel production, preparing the oil for conversion into biofuel.

Recognizing the Chemical Process

Cooking oil is not safe as a fuel on its own, so it undergoes a process called transesterification. This process involves combining the oil (an ester) with methanol or methyl alcohol and a catalyst like sodium chloride to start a chemical reaction. The result is biodiesel (methyl ester) and glycerin. Once the transesterification process is complete, the biodiesel is ready for use in vehicles, machines, and farm equipment, while the extracted glycerin can be used in medicines, cosmetics, and cleaning products.
